Il-Kċina ta’ Marta, joint venture between The Alfred Mizzi Foundation and LOOP, officially inaugurated
Il-Kċina ta’ Marta, a ghost kitchen set up within the grounds of the Tal –Virtu’ Seminary, has been officially inaugurated by His Grace the Archbishop on Monday 6th November 2023.
A joint venture between The Alfred Mizzi Foundation and LOOP, the Church’s social enterprise cooperative, il -Kcina ta’ Marta is the successor of Solidarity Meals, set up by The Alfred Mizzi Foundation and Caritas (Malta) during the worst of COVID times to provide up to 800 meals a day.
Julian Sammut, Foundation Chairman, said that for many, the need for a hearty meal each day remains.
The Alfred Mizzi Foundation is today providing over 100,000 meals a year, through Dar Papa Frangisku (Malta’s first Soup Kitchen), Il-Kcina ta’ Marta, other minor Soup Kitchens and various Foodbanks. The Alfred Mizzi Foundation has recently equipped and furnished facilities at Fr. Hilary Tagliaferro’s Love Kitchen in Paceville and ir –Refettorju, soon to be opened by Dun Anton Damato at il –Bon Pastur home in Balzan. These small welcoming venues, along with two others in Qawra and Birgu, will allow people to enjoy a meal in a friendly and dignified environment in the company of others.
The Alfred Mizzi Foundation has equipped the Kcina ta’ Marta kitchen and provided a van with a temperature-controlled box used to deliver the hundreds of meals to the different distribution hubs around Malta. The Alfred Mizzi Foundation also ensures that the Kcina ta’ Marta is provided with the necessary food resources to prepare 1200 meals each week.
Julian Sammut further added that much of the success behind il –Kcina ta’ Marta is due to the drive of LOOP Manager Albert Debono and the caring commitment of the wonderful group of volunteers led by brothers John and Franco Buttigieg, who run it on a daily basis.
To function successfully The Alfred Mizzi Foundation needs reliable and efficient partners which it has found through Church agencies LOOP and Caritas Malta.
