Double The Wave Challenge
As previously announced, Neil Agius will be attempting a world record breaking swim for a staggering 130km in 50 to 55 hours. Neil has arrived in Linosa, a small island north of Lampedusa to begin his attempt at world record. All 32 crew members have also arrived and are getting ready with 5 sailing boats and 2 rhibs. Incidentally from Linosa to Malta and not the original Tunisia take off because of bad weather conditions in Tunisia, which prevented the crew from leaving the original location. Since the team were waiting for the right time window for this expedition to happen, it was decided that the crew will proceed in order to commence this incredible feat as soon as they received news that the time was right.
The crew sailed off to Sicily on Sunday 27th June and have arrived early this morning with the swim planned to kick off at around 5pm today.
Although the swim will not be following the original route, it will still be a record breaking one since the current world record of longest continuous, unassisted, current-neutral swim along a single-segment stands at 124.4km.
In a post shared by Neil Agius on his Facebook page on Sat morning, Neil had these words to say: “The decision was not taken lightly. We are practicing the mindset, I always talk about – listening to the forces of nature, taking note of the signs and improvising to reach the ultimate goal. This doesn’t make the swim any easier or less of a challenge. All the exact same restrictions apply. It is still set to be a 50-55 hour non stop swim.
I will start swimming on Monday at 5pm. As you can imagine, this takes mental agility from myself and the team to switch course at such short notice. But this is all part of the training and the mindset I am committed to. The excitement ramps up another notch!”
As part of the support for Neil, Wave of Change are encouraging the public to help by taking part in the Double the Wave Challenge. The goal is to collectively pick up 1 million pieces of plastic that would eventually end up in our seas.
For people to participate all they have to do is:
- pick up 6 pieces of plastic anytime, anyplace
- snap a photo of the 6 pcs of plastic collected, tag #DoubletheWave and @waveofchangemalta
- nominate 6 people to join in!
Note: When you participate in #DoubletheWave challenge, please make sure you throw the plastic
away in a recycling bin.
We would also like to see people keeping healthy and fit so we recommend that physical activity remains part of your daily routine. Picking up plastic when walking the dog or just returning from your car to your home is also an easy way to keep fit whilst caring for our environment. Finally, for all those who want to keep up with Neil’s swim, here is the official tracker that will be used during the swim: https://yb.tl/waveofchange21 (only viewable on pc / laptops), for mobile devices, YB races app. should be downloaded.

Attentat tar-Rekord Dinji – Ser isseħħ illum!
Sfida Double The Wave
Kif thabbar qabel, Neil Agius se jkun qed jipprova jikser rekord dinji xokkanti tal-għawm ta 130km f’ħin ta ’50 sa 55 siegħa. Neil wasal Linosa, gżira żgħira fit-tramuntana ta ‘Lampedusa biex jibda l-attentat tiegħu għar-rekord dinji. It-32 membru tal-ekwipaġġ waslu wkoll u qed iħejju ruħhom b’5 dgħajjes li jbaħħru u 2 rhibs. Ir-rotta hija minn Linosa għal Malta u mhux mit-Tuneżija kif kien pjanat it-tluq oriġinarjament minħabba kundizzjonijiet tat-temp ħżiena fit-Tuneżija, li ma ħallewx lill-ekwipaġġ jitilqu mill-post oriġinali. Peress li t-tim kien qed jistenna l-ħin it-tajjeb biex isseħħ din l-espedizzjoni, ġie deċiż li l-ekwipaġġ se jipproċedi sabiex jibda din il-proeza inkredibbli hekk kif irċevew aħbar li l-ħin kien tajjeb.
L-ekwipaġġ baħru lejn Sqallija nhar il-Ħadd 27 ta ’Ġunju u waslu kmieni dalgħodu bl-għawma ppjanata li tibda għall-ħabta tal-5pm illum.
Għalkemm l-għawma mhix se ssegwi r-rotta oriġinali, xorta se tkun rekord peress li r-rekord dinji attwali ta ‘l-itwal għawma kontinwa, mingħajr għajnuna, għawma newtrali kurrenti t-tul ta segment wieħed tinsab f’124.4km.
F’post maqsum minn Neil Agius fuq il-paġna ta ’Facebook tiegħu nhar is-Sibt filgħodu, Neil kellu dan il-kliem x’jgħid: “The decision was not taken lightly.
Bħala parti mill-appoġġ għal Neil, Wave of Change qed iħeġġeġ lill-pubbliku biex jgħinu billi jieħdu sehem fid-Double the Wave Challenge. L-għan huwa li kollettivament jinġabbru miljun biċċa plastik li eventwalment jispiċċaw fl-ibħra tagħna.
Biex in-nies jipparteċipaw, kull ma għandhom jagħmlu huwa:
Jaqbdu 6 biċċiet tal-plastik f’kull ħin u f’kull post
Jieħdu ritratt tas-6 biċċiet tal-plastik miġbura, Jittaggjaw #DoubletheWave u @waveofchangemalta
Jinnominaw 6 persuni biex jingħaqdu magħhom!
Nota: Meta tipparteċipa fl-isfida #DoubletheWave, jekk jogħġbok kun żgur li tarmi l-plastik f’reċipjent għar-riċiklaġġ.
Nixtiequ wkoll li n-nies jinżammu b’saħħithom u tajbin u għalhekk nirrakkomandaw li l-attività fiżika tibqa parti mir-rutina ta’ kuljum tiegħek. Li tiġbor il-plastik meta tmexxi l-kelb jew sempliċement tirritorna mill-karozza għad-dar tiegħek huwa wkoll mod faċli biex tibqa tajjeb waqt li tieħu ħsieb l-ambjent. Finalment, għal dawk kollha li jixtiequ jlaħħqu ma ‘l-għawma ta’ Neil, hawn huwa t-tracker uffiċjali li se jintuża waqt l-għawm: https://yb.tl/waveofchange21 (viżibbli biss fuq pc / laptops), għal apparat mobbli – applikazzjoni YB races għandha titniżżel.
Aktar aġġornamenti ghandhom jiġu segwiti.
Grazzi tal-appoġġ.
Timijiet ta ’Neil Agius u Wave of Change.
