…and many hours later

Last week, a huge ghost net measuring 242m was collected from near Ċirkewwa. This net is the largest ghost net we have found in Malta, as big as 27 buses.

Unfortunately, this net killed at least 40 fish since it was found, leaving a trail of skeletons in their place. The net had no identification tag, was in a marine protected area and had no markers (most probably why the net was lost).

This ghost net recovery was supported by Saving Our Blue, Ambjent, Ministry for The Environment, Climate Change and Planning and ERA.

Thank you also to our partners and sponsors: Raniero’s Adventures – Live Life, Dive Systems – Malta, The Alfred Mizzi Foundation, Malta Tourism Authority, Clean Malta – Cleansing and Maintenance Division, Portughes Dry Cleaning, The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Ċirkewwa Marine Park for their helping hands and Bartek Trzcinski from Ghost Diving Poland for his knowledge and assistance.
